Pit Bulls
Pit Bull vs Bully
Most people do not realise there is a distinction between a Pit and a Bully, but the distinctions are very important, especially in temperament. The American Pit Bull Terrier is an actual Breed and the Bully is not. Pit Bulls are taller, slenderer, more althletic with smaller heads and longer muzzles that the American Bully. Bully's are shorter, wider, heavier (proportionately speaking) with large blocky heads and short muzzles.
American Pit Bull Terrier (APBT):
Origins: Unknown
Many theories exist that all seem to be possible. They seem to have existed simultaneously in England, Scotland, and Ireland. They were the favorites of farmers who used them for controlling and herding of livestock and protecting the farmer. The farmer also used them as "nanny" dogs for his children as companions and protectors. Were also used in fighting pits against each other and against bulls and bears.
American Bully (Bully):
Origins: Late 1980's America
These dogs are a conglomeration of various other breeds and should be considered muts. They are mixtures of APBTs and other Bulldog breeds. I also know that in the desire for a "Pocket Bully" (extra short and small bully) that Boston Terriers and Chihuahuas have been used in breeding programs. Since there is no exact formula for producing an American Bully, they can not be considered an actual new breed, but considering them a new "category" is more accurate.
The APBT is non-human aggressive by nature and the #1 rated childrens dog. The reason for their non-human aggressiveness is that because they were used in fighting pits and had to me managed there by humans, the need for non-human aggression in a fighting animal was paramont and absolute. This was accomplished by euthanising any of them that showed any human aggression. I know this sounds cruel, but it also eliminated human aggression completely from the breed.
Since the Bully is a mixture of a non-human aggressive breed and breeds that can have human aggression, it is "crap shoot" so to speak as to whether your new Bully pup will turn out to be human aggressive. And even if he is not, some of his/her offspring can be.
So if you want the Ultimate Family Dog, stay away from Bullies and go with a Pure Bred American Pit Bull Terrier instead.
